Did you know your email list is your most valuable asset? Think about it, we all use it and we at least glance at the title of every email we receive.
I realize that seems a little contradictory to my previous article, Companies and Colleges Stop Using Email, but it’s not at all. Just because some companies colleges are not using it to reduce costs, doesn’t mean that the general population between 30-75 years old has stopped using it.
Contrary to some suggestions, social media has not replaced email and will not in the near future.
According to the Pew Internet and American Life Project data from May 2011, 92% of adult US Internet users send or read email. The same source suggests that 66% of those email users do so as part of a typical day.
A May 2011 report by technology market research firm The Radicati Group, estimates that there are 3.1 billion email accounts in 2011, expected to rise to over 4 billion by 2015.
Here is the point, if you’re not providing your audience with a way to connect with you via email, you’re missing out! It is still your most valuable marketing asset for getting information out quickly.
FYI, I recently read an opininon in a Social Media Examiner Club Forum that the value of an email list of 5,000 is 10 times or more the value of a Twitter or Facebook following of 5,000.
Rich Brooks, President of flyte new media, said in the discussion board; “It’s too easy to ignore someone in social media, but if you’ve gotten someone to subscribe to an opt-in email list, even if they’re too busy to listen to you now they at least have to click “delete”, meaning you’ve made an impression.”
Many businesses are growing and have great metrics because of email. It’s very inexpensive, and if it isn’t part of your overall marketing campaign, it ought to be.
Here is a story from Social Media Examiner that demonstrates the impact of email and how it helped propelled them to one of the top websites in the world. Of course, they didn’t use email all by itself, but it was crucial to their overall marketing plan.
If you’ve been ignoring email, you may be doing so at your own peril. Connecting with your audience where they are at is critical to any businesses success.
I have to make one disclaimer, your emails should all be opt-in. In other words, they voluntarily joined your email list. Don’t buy a list of emails and then spam them. Not only will it give you a bad reputation, but it could also get you in trouble with the law.
Email accounts are still growing and it isn’t going away anytime soon. So join Constant Contact, iContact, or Aweber today and start growing your email list.
You will be glad you did! Remember, next to your website, email is your most valuable asset.
Do you use email, please take a moment and share your experiences and how email has helped your business.
